What is Alternative Medicine?

What is alternative medicine? Well, it goes by many names and definitions. Here are some definitions from various sources. Alternative Medicine: any of the various systems of healing or treating disease (as chiropractic, homeopathy, or faith healing) not included in the traditional medical curricula taught in the United States and Britain -Webster’s Dictionary The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Section staff of the National Library of Medicine classifies alternative medicine under the term complementary therapies. This is defined as therapeutic practices which are not currently considered an integral part of conventional allopathic medical practice. They may lack biomedical explanations but as they become better researched some, such as physical therapy, diet, and acupuncture, become widely accepted whereas others, such as humors or radium therapy, quietly fade away, yet are important historical footnotes. Therapies are termed as Complementary when used in addition to conventional treatments and as Alternative when used instead of conventional treatment. The National Library of Medicine’s previous definition was an unrelated group of non-orthodox therapeutic practices, often with explanatory systems that do not follow conventional biomedical explanations and non-orthodox therapeutic systems which have no satisfactory scientific explanation for their effectiveness. Some define alternative medicine as medical interventions not taught at United States medical schools or not available at United States hospitals. The Panel on Definition and Description, CAM Research Methodology Conference, Office of Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, April 1995 defined complementary and alternative medicine as a broad domain of healing resources that encompasses all health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the politically dominant health system of a particular society or culture in a given historical period. CAM includes all such practices and ideas self-defined by their users as preventing or treating illness or promoting health and well being. Boundaries within CAM and between CAM domain and the domain of the dominant system are not always sharp or fixed. Alternative therapies include, but are not limited to the following disciplines: folk medicine, herbal medicine, diet fads, homeopathy, faith healing, new age healing, chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, and music therapy.

Vitamin A & D: Fermented Fish Oil

The debate goes on concerning the reliability of fish oil as a good source of vitamin A and D. Claims often assert that the vitamin A in fish oil can be toxic, while others feel the opposite. Many of the great historical cultures had one sacred food which they relied on to ensure strong mind, body, and spirit: Fermented fish/fish liver oil. Whether it was the Roman Soldier who was given a daily ration of fermented fish oil, or the Scandinavian Viking that had a drum of fermenting cod livers outside the door of his home, fish oil has long been considered a source for good health. Even grandma always had a bottle of cod liver oil in the back cupboard. Vitamins A and D levels for these fish oils vary widely depending on methodology, lab and batch. Fish oil, especially the one obtained from liver such as the cod liver oil, is a rich source of Vitamin A and Vitamin D. However, excessive dosage of cod liver oil can lead to Vitamin toxicity, accumulation of excessive vitamins in the body, which can cause side effects. A 1995 study that showed cod liver oil having negative effects, from which governmental policy has been derived, has been largely criticized by researchers for overstating the negative effects. The most likely culprits for negative results in the study are topical and oral vitamin A analogs, not cod liver oil. Only 1.4 percent of the people in the study took supplements exceeding 10,000 IU a day, not a large enough sample from which to draw conclusions. However, it is important to never combine cod liver oil or vitamin A from supplements with oral or topical medications for acne or other skin disorders treated with retinoic acid derivatives. Researchers at Weston Price recommended 2 table spoons of your standard cod liver oil daily. Too much use of cod liver oil, or any other natural remedy can be toxic, and therefore should be avoided.

Vitamin A & D: Fermented Fish Oil

A major health problem that we are suffering from in the U.S. is high cholesterol. Flax seed is now being considered an effective new method to combat high cholesterol in males. Professor Suzanne Hendrich, an expert in food science and human nutrition, led a recent study which examined the effects of flaxseed lignan in ninety people with high cholesterol. By eating about three tablespoons (150 milligrams) of flaxseed lignans per day there were decreased cholesterol levels in men by just under 10 percent over the three month study. Dr. Hendrich explained that “Because there are people who can’t take something like Lipitor, this could at least give you some of that cholesterol-lowering benefit. The other thing is, there are certainly some people who would prefer to not use a drug, but rather use foods to try to maintain their health. So this potentially would be something to consider.” The number of people suffering from high cholesterol is now around 17%, according to the Center for Disease Control. Having a natural option for dealing with this problem mean a lot to many of the diagnosed.

You Can Heal Your Body With Ionic Detox

More than ever people around the world are struggling to find time to actively maintain their health. Most of us aren’t just procrastinating. In the majority of cases we are struggling to overcome our unhealthy lifestyle habits as well as deal with internal imbalances that beset our efforts. If we stop and look at what these various factors are in each of our individual lives we can then make the needed changes. There are several main issues that we all have to look at. 1. The state of our emotions- are we too stressed? 2. Our diet- too much fatty acids, preservatives or sugar? 3. Drug use- Legal or illegal. 4. Our environment- clean water and air are hard to find these days. 5. Gene pool- we have all ed a slew of strengths and weaknesses. The underlying factor in our health is our immune system. It is very important to work to have our immune system working well. When healthy, our immune system will prevent poor health. The entire idea behind ionic foot detox can be summed up very easily. It is a powerful method of helping our immune systems to do a better job at what they are already trying to do, which is to keep us healthy. During an ionic detox session we absorb negative ions that work throughout our bodies to neutralize free radicals and other toxins. As these toxins are neutralized our body’s immune system is able to more effectively clean them out. As Dr M. Amin, PH.D., Doctor of Naturopathy puts it, “Ionic Detox will strengthen the immune system to fight any invading germs, bacteria or viruses. I am a classic example. I do not take any medication including flu shots since 1989. Do I get the flu? never!”

Also vital to a healthy body is a proper acidity. The ideal body pH is 7.3 to 7.4, or slightly alkaline. Our living cells are acidic on the inside within an alkaline surrounding. The proper balance must be maintained for normal metabolic processing. Unfortunately, the average American diet is decidedly acidic, especially with the high doses of fatty acids and particularly sugar. Combining that with other acid increasers like stress and exposure to pollution makes keeping a proper balance difficult. A body that is too acidic will also hold onto more heavy metals like mercury. These metals also cause stress to the body, thus creating more acids and a cruel unhealthy cycle. Improving or maintaining the right balance of alkaline to acid should be done with multiple methods, the most important of which is a balanced diet with a roughly 60/40 ratio of alkaline foods to acid, even higher if the body is too acidic. In addition to a proper diet, ionic detox sessions can also help reduce the pH level in the body by neutralizing acids. Many of these steps towards a healthy body overlap in purpose and go hand in hand, like reducing toxins, increasing alkaline balance and reducing acidity. When your body becomes more alkaline and more efficient at removing toxins, sundry health benefits may occur. In a January 2009 survey, 126 ionic foot detox customers were asked what specific health benefits they or their clients received from using HEALTHandMED.com ionic detox foot bath systems. The most common they reported were pain relief, increased energy, improved sleep, improved digestion, decreased swelling, improved circulation, reduced weight, improved skin and emotional benefits. Here are some tips to having a healthy immune system and a strong body:1. Sleep-a well rested body can work much better than a tired one. 2. Eat Right-reduce acidic foods and increase alkaline food intake. 3. Ionic Foot Detox-reduce toxins and acid levels by helping the body excrete them. 4. Exercise-lowers stress and improved blood flows helps body work better. 5. Sunshine Exposure-fight viruses with vitamin D from the sun.

New Research: Blackcurrents & Asthma

Asthma is one of the chronic illnesses that many people struggle to deal with effectively. New findings are providing an alternative avenue for dealing with chronic asthma allergies. A New Zealand government-owned science company, Plant & Food Research, is reporting that the natural chemicals in a New Zealand blackcurrent may help with asthma. The researchers observed in laboratory studies that blackcurrent works to suppress lung tissue inflammation as well as minimize it. “To find natural compounds that potentially reduce lung inflammation and complement the body’s own immune response is an exciting breakthrough,” says Dr Hurst of the Plant & Food Research team. Find out more here: Suzanne M. Hurst, Tony K. McGhie, Janine M. Cooney, Dwayne J. Jensen, Elaine M. Gould, Kirsty A. Lyall, Roger D. Hurst. Blackcurrant proanthocyanidins augment IFN-gamma-induced suppression of IL-4 stimulated CCL26 secretion in alveolar epithelial cells. Pesticides Slow Childhood Development

Research continues to poor in about the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have on humans and the environment. The latest sudy shows how a specific pesticide used in various agricultural settings is linked with delaying childhood development. Researchers at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health have found an association between exposure to the pesticide Chlorpyrifos and diminished childhood developmental capabilities. Chlorpyrifos was banned from residential use in 2001 but continues to be widely used in agricultural applications such as fruits and vegetables Lead author of the study, Gina Lovasi explained that “this study helps to fill in the gaps about what is known about the effect of the pesticide chlorpyrifos on the development of young children by showing that there is a clear-cut association between this chemical and delayed mental and motor skill development in children even when there are other potentially harmful environmental factors present.” “Although this pesticide has been banned for residential use in the United States, chlorpyrifos and other organophosphorus insecticides are still commonly used for a variety of agricultural purposes,” explained study co-author Virginia Rauh, ScD, co-deputy director for the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, and professor of clinical population and family health. “We hope that the results of this study, further demonstrating the neurotoxicity of chlorpyrifos under a range of community conditions, may inform public health professionals and policy-makers about the potential hazards of exposure to this chemical for pregnant women and young children.”

Plastic Harms Unborn Children

Recent news posts have called attention to the dangerous chemical BPA (Bisphenol A) found in common plastics such as water bottles. New research is furthering the discovery of just how this commonly used plastic chemical can effect the development and long term health of unborn children, via their mothers. “Exposure to BPA may be harmful during pregnancy; this exposure may permanently affect the fetus,” explained Hugh S. Taylor, Ph.D., co-author of the study from Yale University School of Medicine. “We need to better identify the effects of environmental contaminants on not just crude measures such as birth defects, but also their effect in causing more subtle developmental errors.” Exstensive testing is revealing that the exposure to BPA as a fetus continual effects the person in to adult hood. BPA exposure can lead to advanced puberty, fertility problems, altered mammary development, a variety of hormone-related cancers and altered reproductive function. BPA is commonly found in baby bottles and other plastics that mothers and children come in contact with on a daily basis. Gerald Weissmann, M.D., cautioned, “remember how diethylstilbestrol (DES) caused birth defects and cancers in young women whose mothers were given such hormones during pregnancy. We’d better watch out for BPA, which seems to carry similar epigenetic risks across the generations. The BPA baby bottle scare may be only the tip of the iceberg.”

Negative Ions and Healing

Special ionized rooms have been used in treating burn victims at Philadelphia’s Northeastern Hospital as it was found that negative ions helped tranquilize those in pain. Dr. Robert McGowan also noted that “negative ions make burns dry out faster, heal faster and with less scarring. They also reduce the need for skin grafting. They make the patient more optimistic. He sleeps better.” Himalayan salt rooms have been created to reproduce the therapeutic effects of naturally occurring salt caves, providing for easy breathing from allergy-related and other respiratory ailments. The occupier is surrounded by negative ions, fully enjoying the therapeutic benefits.

Seaweed: The End of Obesity?

“Obesity is an ever-growing problem and many people find it difficult to stick to diet and exercise plans in order to lose weight,” explained Dr Iain Brownlee -lead researcher at the Newcastle University. “There are countless claims about miracle cures for weight loss but only a few cases offer any sound scientific evidence to back up these claims, he continued.” Dr. Brownlee and his research team have found that a commonly found seaweed fiber reduces fat absorption from food by 75%. The Alginate, or seaweed fiber, is able to prevent the body from absorbing fat from any and all food consumption. Upon completion of their study, Dr. Brownlee explained that “the aim of this study was to put these products to the test and our initial findings are that alginates significantly reduce fat digestion. This suggests that if we can add the natural fibre to products commonly eaten daily — such as bread, biscuits and yoghurts — up to three quarters of the fat contained in that meal could simply pass through the body.” “We have already added the alginate to bread and initial taste tests have been extremely encouraging. Now the next step to to carry out clinical trials to find out how effective they are when eaten as part of a normal diet. These initial findings suggest alginates could offer a very real solution in the battle against obesity, said Dr. Brownlee.”
