Ear Infections: Antibiotics Not So Good

A new study was released this month that shines light on the common ear infection and the role that antibiotics play in getting them to go away. The results don’t shine a very favorable light on antibiotics.

Research from a UCLA study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. When referring to antibiotic use on ear infections their study concluded that “Antibiotics are modestly more effective than no treatment but cause adverse effects in 4% to 10% of children. Most antibiotics have comparable clinical success.” The research showed that although there is a slightly better recovery rate for children who use antibiotics on their ear infections, the side effects of rashes and diarrhea offset the overall benefit. This leaves the decision to use antibiotics in a gray area for the average parent. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recently started a campaign called “Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work.” Their hope is to bring issues such as childhood ear infection and other complicated antibiotic use scenarios into the public eye and assist parents in making better antibiotic use decisions.

Acupuncture For Pain Relief

Proponents of acupuncture will be happy to know that new research shows it to be an affective tool for pain mitigation.

Researchers from the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology at University Hospital in Essen, Germany collaborated with the Department of Complementary and Integrative Medicine at University of Duisburg-Essen to study the effects of acupuncture on pain relief. The researchers used fMRI’s (functional magnetic resonance imaging) to monitor brain activity while the test subjects were experiencing pain in conjunction with acupuncture. “Until now, the role of acupuncture in the perception and processing of pain has been controversial,” explained lead researcher Nina Theysohn, M.D. “Functional MRI gives us the opportunity to directly observe areas of the brain that are activated during pain perception and see the variances that occur with acupuncture.” “Activation of brain areas involved in pain perception was significantly reduced or modulated under acupuncture,” said Dr. Theysohn. “Acupuncture is supposed to act through at least two mechanisms—nonspecific expectancy-based effects and specific modulation of the incoming pain signal,” Dr. Theysohn said. “Our findings support that both these nonspecific and specific mechanisms exist, suggesting that acupuncture can help relieve pain.” At we have several handy products that our customers find useful for pain relief. Corn Based BPA Replacement

For those of you following the continued research into the safety/dangers of Bisphenol A (BPA) here is some encouraging news. Scientists have figured out how to create a product that acts much the same as BPA, but it is derived from corn, instead of petroleum.

The company Archer Daniels Midland is now producing the corn-based chemical called isosorbide. “With increased interest in environmental improvement, we see growing opportunity to expand our portfolio of renewable industrial products,” said the ADM Industrial Chemicals business director, Robert Broomham. Isosorbide can be used in the manufacture of most of the same products as BPA can, such as polyesters, epoxy resins for paints, polycarbonates for durable goods and optical media, packaging and durable goods and detergents. Althought corn is a renewable resource it is also a food crop and therefore many people do not see it as ideal. Another concern is that isosorbide has not been sufficiently tested to see if it leads to health problems unique to it’s composition. Bees Can Cure Mouth Ulcers

A protective, sterilizing product bees make for constructing their hives has just been turned into a powerful medicine for pesky mouth ulcers.

The natural component is called propolis. “Propolis is a complex chemical mix and a very useful natural product,” said Professor Anant Paradkar, who led the research. “Propolis has been shown to be anti-microbial, anti-fungal, a strong anti-oxidant, non-allergenic and can boost the immune system. It also promotes wound healing and has anesthetic properties.” Researchers have known about propolis for many years, but due to its waxy, smelly nature it has not been used widely in medicinal circles. Researchers from the University of Bradford’s Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science have discovered how to purify the propolis. “There is a substantial market for propolis-based products — particularly in China, the USA and South Asia. The main stumbling block in developing products has been the solubility and odor issues, which our formulation overcomes,” explained Paradkar. Working specifically to use propolis as a mouth ulcer medicine the team of researchers has not only created a natural alternative to the current types of mouth ulcer gels, but their new product appears to have one small advantage. “A problem for mouth gels is that adhesion to the skin membrane inside the mouth is difficult — because of the nature of the surface, the gel can simply slide off,” said Professor Paradkar. “As propolis retains some of its stickiness even in a water soluble formulation, when it is applied to specific areas in the mouth, it adheres more effectively.” Look to the company Nature’s Laboratory to market the end result. They are working directly with the researchers from the University of Bradford’s Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science to bring this product to market.

Urban Farming Goes Big In Detroit

New research shows that urban farms in Detroit, Michigan have the capacity to produce the majority of the required produce for their region.

The study is found in the journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development. The research was done by C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems at MSU. “What’s clear from our production analysis is that even with a limited growing season, significant quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables eaten by Detroiters could be grown locally,” said Kathryn Colasanti, the graduate student who led the study at MSU. “And investments in produce storage facilities and hoop houses would increase this capacity substantially.” The study found that 75% of vegetables and 40% of fruits can be produced by urban farms. By using arial maps the researchers were able to identify  around 4,848 acres of urban land that can be used for farming. “Our totals are conservative,” explained Mike Hamm, who leads the C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems. “But it may be closer to representing the quantity of land more readily available for urban farms and gardens because these parcels are publicly owned and clear of any buildings.”

How Chocolate Benefits Blood Pressure

There have been many tests done over the years that have shown chocolate to be beneficial for cardiovascular health. Only now has research been done that shows exactly what it is about chocolate that leads to health benefits.

Researchers from Linköping University in Sweden worked with a group of volunteers to make this latest discovery. “We have previously shown that green tea inhibits the enzyme ACE, which is involved in the body’s fluid balance and blood pressure regulation. Now we wanted to study the effect of cocoa, since the active substances catechins and procyanidines are related,” explained Ingrid Persson. Researchers tested blood samples from the volunteers before and then three hours after the test subjects had eaten 75 grams of dark chocolate that contained 72% cocoa. The results were comparable to high blood pressure drugs that are designed to inhibit ACE. “Our findings indicate that changes in lifestyle with the help of foods that contain large concentrations of catechins and procyaninides prevent cardiovascular diseases,” concluded Persson. At we carry a fabulous product that is recommended for improving cardiovascular health. You can see it here: VasCor Complex

Why Detoxify?

Our bodies accumulate different types of toxins every day through eating, drinking and breathing, as well as exposure to medications, chemicals, toxic environments, etc. These toxins cause cells within the body to die faster, which leads to pre-mature aging and diseases. Our bodies have organs and systems to detoxify them. Still, over the years the accumulation of toxins, improper diet, and sedentary lifestyles causes the excretory organs of our bodies to function suboptimally. This leaves us with lethargic and weak immune systems, as well as a susceptibility to diseases that can often lead to early and painful death.

Symptoms such as hormone imbalances, fu-like aches and pains, poor nutrient absorption, constipation, poor digestion, fatulence, fatigue, weight gain, excessive mucus, poor concentration, headaches, edema, memory disorders, depression, infammation of joints and muscles, skin problems, bad breath and strong body odor are all associated with toxic build-up in our bodies. Diseases such as Chronic Fatigue, Allergies, Fibromyalgia, Thyroid Diseases, and Cancer, to name only a few, have been directly linked to environmental toxins in the body. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that there are more than 20,000 chemicals that our bodies cannot metabolize. The toxic substances that can’t be removed from our bodies are stored in our fat cells and organs, causing an epidemic of modern diseases and obese patients around the world. The Columbia University School of Public Health reports that 95% of cancer is caused by diet and environmental toxicity. According to the EPA, our bodies accumulate 210 micrograms of just plasticizers (toxic phthalates) every day! Our modern world mandates the need to make healthy choices. The IonizeMe Ionic Detoxifcation system helps to eliminate toxins and give the body a boost. It is a positive step to sustaining good health.
