Detox vs Diet-The Ultimate Battle of Weight Loss

Todays Blog posting is centered around the on-going battle between Detox and Diet. Detox vs Diet-The Ultimate Battle of Weight Loss. With the amount of information each and every person receives on a daily basis due to social media, it is quite hard to determine between fact and fiction. Especially when it comes to health and fitness. On a daily basis we troll social media avenues like Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest to see what will work best for our clients so we can provide the best service possible. During these trolling sessions we run across hundreds and thousands of “do it yourself” bloggers who say they have a great new ways for you to lose weight. Now we hope that our customers are a little too picky about their bodies to take some random bloggers advice as gospel but just to be sure we wanted to write this blog to help you sort through the “fat” no pun intended. To start off lets define the difference between Detox and Diet. “Diet” technically means to restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight. “Detoxify” is defined as changing eating habits in an attempt to remove toxic substances or qualites. The problem is that many of us think of “detox” as a noun, as in to do “a detox” for a few days here and there. We emphasize a “detox” in the verb form, ie detoxing continually, as we also amass toxins constantly. Diets focus on what you are eating and how much you are eating. Common diet’s out there keep you to a certain alloted amount of calories on a daily basis and filter out common foods like meat’s, bread’s, and sugar’s. The problem we have with this type of diet is that it is not substainable to most. The average person that loses weight on a calorie limiting diet will bounce back up to their prior weight or more due to the strict limitations of food. “I lost 10 lbs in the last two weeks! I think I deserve a candy bar…or 3.” This type of mentality is the problem with diets, and leads to people trying numerous diets written by numerous people that may or may not have the authority or knowledge to design. Another major problem with calorie alloted dieting is the LACK OF FOOD! You may lose 10-20 lbs but your energy levels are down, your skin and nails weaken, hair begins to fall out, and your overall feeling of wellness is plummeted into a dark abyss of malnutrition. Detoxification on the other hand has numerous benefits if you do it CORRECTLY! Detoxing should be a constant plan in your lifestyle to stay healthy and clean yourself of unwanted toxins in your system. On a constant basis we are absorbing toxins into our body that cause numerous health problems and yet the misconception of a detox being a one time thing still exists. The focus should instead be on creating a proper nutrition plan that will crave all the urges you have for every kind of food, creating stability, and sustainability. Antioxidant-rich, fibrous natural foods in your diet will constantly detoxify your body by removing all of those unwanted toxins and chemicals that do not belong in your body. Detoxification is a natural process that your body is constantly doing, it just needs a little aid from you to help it run smoother and faster. Detoxification done properly will help you naturally lose weight with no malnutrition, and will better your general health and wellness much more than your standard diet. When planning on losing weight or starting a diet or detox, remember think of it in terms of length compared to immediate reward. Detox vs Diet-The Ultimate Battle of Weight Loss, who do you think will prevail?

Ear Infections: Antibiotics Not So Good

A new study was released this month that shines light on the common ear infection and the role that antibiotics play in getting them to go away. The results don’t shine a very favorable light on antibiotics.

Research from a UCLA study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. When referring to antibiotic use on ear infections their study concluded that “Antibiotics are modestly more effective than no treatment but cause adverse effects in 4% to 10% of children. Most antibiotics have comparable clinical success.” The research showed that although there is a slightly better recovery rate for children who use antibiotics on their ear infections, the side effects of rashes and diarrhea offset the overall benefit. This leaves the decision to use antibiotics in a gray area for the average parent. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recently started a campaign called “Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work.” Their hope is to bring issues such as childhood ear infection and other complicated antibiotic use scenarios into the public eye and assist parents in making better antibiotic use decisions.

Acupuncture For Pain Relief

Proponents of acupuncture will be happy to know that new research shows it to be an affective tool for pain mitigation.

Researchers from the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology at University Hospital in Essen, Germany collaborated with the Department of Complementary and Integrative Medicine at University of Duisburg-Essen to study the effects of acupuncture on pain relief. The researchers used fMRI’s (functional magnetic resonance imaging) to monitor brain activity while the test subjects were experiencing pain in conjunction with acupuncture. “Until now, the role of acupuncture in the perception and processing of pain has been controversial,” explained lead researcher Nina Theysohn, M.D. “Functional MRI gives us the opportunity to directly observe areas of the brain that are activated during pain perception and see the variances that occur with acupuncture.” “Activation of brain areas involved in pain perception was significantly reduced or modulated under acupuncture,” said Dr. Theysohn. “Acupuncture is supposed to act through at least two mechanisms—nonspecific expectancy-based effects and specific modulation of the incoming pain signal,” Dr. Theysohn said. “Our findings support that both these nonspecific and specific mechanisms exist, suggesting that acupuncture can help relieve pain.” At HEALTHandMED.com we have several handy products that our customers find useful for pain relief. Corn Based BPA Replacement

For those of you following the continued research into the safety/dangers of Bisphenol A (BPA) here is some encouraging news. Scientists have figured out how to create a product that acts much the same as BPA, but it is derived from corn, instead of petroleum.

The company Archer Daniels Midland is now producing the corn-based chemical called isosorbide. “With increased interest in environmental improvement, we see growing opportunity to expand our portfolio of renewable industrial products,” said the ADM Industrial Chemicals business director, Robert Broomham. Isosorbide can be used in the manufacture of most of the same products as BPA can, such as polyesters, epoxy resins for paints, polycarbonates for durable goods and optical media, packaging and durable goods and detergents. Althought corn is a renewable resource it is also a food crop and therefore many people do not see it as ideal. Another concern is that isosorbide has not been sufficiently tested to see if it leads to health problems unique to it’s composition. To read about the dangers of BPA please see recents posts about it here: BPA Health Concerns

Chinese Herbs Benefit Allergy Sufferers

The complex issues surrounding allergies have lead to a new study that shows a positive association between allergies and chinese herb use.

Researchers from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) Integrative Medicine Committee concluded that certain Chinese herbal formulus can be used to treat food allergies. The primary herbal formula being tested is called Food Allergy Herbal Formula (FAHF-2). “FAHF-2 has been shown to have a prolonged preventive effect up to 40 weeks,” explained Helen Chan, MD, of Hong Kong, vice chair of the ACAAI Integrative Medicine Committee. “It has also been shown to be safe, with very few side effects, and is a one-course treatment for all allergens.” “Integrative therapies blend the art and science of medicine,” said allergist William Silvers, MD, of the ACAAI Integrative Medicine Committee. “This exciting area of medicine offers a variety of complementary approaches, so each patient receives truly individualized care.” “The use of substances found in nature, such as herbs, foods and vitamins, can be helpful in treating various allergies when combined with traditional therapies,” added Dr. Silvers.

Bees Can Cure Mouth Ulcers

A protective, sterilizing product bees make for constructing their hives has just been turned into a powerful medicine for pesky mouth ulcers.

The natural component is called propolis. “Propolis is a complex chemical mix and a very useful natural product,” said Professor Anant Paradkar, who led the research. “Propolis has been shown to be anti-microbial, anti-fungal, a strong anti-oxidant, non-allergenic and can boost the immune system. It also promotes wound healing and has anesthetic properties.” Researchers have known about propolis for many years, but due to its waxy, smelly nature it has not been used widely in medicinal circles. Researchers from the University of Bradford’s Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science have discovered how to purify the propolis. “There is a substantial market for propolis-based products — particularly in China, the USA and South Asia. The main stumbling block in developing products has been the solubility and odor issues, which our formulation overcomes,” explained Paradkar. Working specifically to use propolis as a mouth ulcer medicine the team of researchers has not only created a natural alternative to the current types of mouth ulcer gels, but their new product appears to have one small advantage. “A problem for mouth gels is that adhesion to the skin membrane inside the mouth is difficult — because of the nature of the surface, the gel can simply slide off,” said Professor Paradkar. “As propolis retains some of its stickiness even in a water soluble formulation, when it is applied to specific areas in the mouth, it adheres more effectively.” Look to the company Nature’s Laboratory to market the end result. They are working directly with the researchers from the University of Bradford’s Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science to bring this product to market.

How To Spot BPA Free Receipt Paper

The only company in the U.S. that produces a BPA free version of thermal paper, which is the widely used paper for receipts, has just announced a new method of letting consumers know that they are not being exposed to BPA. We recently updated you on a new study that had discovered that the BPA found on most types of receipt paper was entering the body through the skin. You can see that post here: BPA Toxin Coats Cash Register Receipts The largest producer of thermal paper, Appleton, is also the only producer of BPA free thermal paper. They have come up with a clever way for consumers to know that their receipts are indeed Appleton’s BPA free paper. They now add small flakes of red rayon fibers to the back of their BPA free thermal paper. With continual research revealing the dangers of exposure to BPA, news that small steps are being taken to give consumers the ability to chose to avoid BPA is more than welcome.

Urban Farming Goes Big In Detroit

New research shows that urban farms in Detroit, Michigan have the capacity to produce the majority of the required produce for their region.

The study is found in the journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development. The research was done by C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems at MSU. “What’s clear from our production analysis is that even with a limited growing season, significant quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables eaten by Detroiters could be grown locally,” said Kathryn Colasanti, the graduate student who led the study at MSU. “And investments in produce storage facilities and hoop houses would increase this capacity substantially.” The study found that 75% of vegetables and 40% of fruits can be produced by urban farms. By using arial maps the researchers were able to identify  around 4,848 acres of urban land that can be used for farming. “Our totals are conservative,” explained Mike Hamm, who leads the C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems. “But it may be closer to representing the quantity of land more readily available for urban farms and gardens because these parcels are publicly owned and clear of any buildings.”
